About the Network

There are 56 Councils for the Voluntary Sector operating across Scotland. The CVS Network covers every local authority area in Scotland, providing services in urban, rural and island environments.

  • Thrive – Direct capacity building support to community and voluntary organisations
  • Connect – A catalyst for effective engagement between the community and voluntary sector and the local decision-making and planning structures

Across the Network, local CVS also deliver a range of services to meet local need beyond the core work of Thrive and Connect including projects that tackle local transport inadequacies, reduce social isolation and increase the employability of local people.

In supporting the local Sector, CVS facilitate the Thrive programme through the provision of start-up support, including advice on legal structures, governance and recruitment – as well as on securing much needed funding and on-going developmental support. The increased role of the Sector in delivering much-needed services locally brings with it additional support needs which are addressed through one-to-one advice and support, health-checks and training to build the capacity of organisations to deliver high quality services to communities across Scotland through structures that are fit for purpose.

Under the Connect agenda, the CVS Network currently represents the interests of community and voluntary organisations on a wide range of forums, including Community Planning Partnerships, Community Health Partnerships and Local Social Economy Partnerships.

Supporting the work of each CVS, communication plays an integral role. CVS use briefings, events, newsletters and websites to communicate with community and voluntary organisations across Scotland, keeping them up-to-date with new legislation and policy developments and offering opportunities for local groups to share best practice.

In each of their operating areas, CVS are valued and recognised as the local development and support agency for the Third Sector. Stakeholders and customers range from informal community groups through to flourishing social enterprises operating regionally and nationally.
