SCVO Equalities
Oppressive attitudes, practices and ideologies, which are expressed in individual, institutional and structural discrimination, remain prevalent in society. The voluntary sector has been and is responsible for major advances in policy and practice in achieving a culture shift and in tackling discrimination.

SCVO is committed to ensuring that that the voluntary sector has the skills and capacity necessary to meet the challenges of advancing equality of opportunity. SCVO has developed an extensive programme of work on equalities issues within the voluntary sector. SCVO is further committed to taking the voluntary sectors message and experience on promoting equality to government, the public and private sectors and the public at large.

Women and Leadership Project

SCVO have secured funding from the European Structural Funds under priority 2 and the Equalities and Human Rights Commission for an innovative pilot project targeting both women's personal skills development and the implementation of "equalities mainstreaming" within third sector organisations.

The increasing importance of women in the labour market is well recognised - as are the impediments to economic growth caused by female under-representation and discriminatory practices in senior level and professional posts.  Direct intervention and support at both a personal level and an organisational level can help to support those organisations seeking to "mainstream" equalities.

The project aims to support the "mainstreaming" of equalities through an organisational development programme, tailored organisational support, a Women and Leadership personal development programme, additional mentoring support, a series of networking events, conferences, a web network and an e-newsletter.

By working with individuals and organisations simultaneously we will support those women facing multiple barriers and enhance the competitiveness, effectiveness, efficiency and performance of third sector organisations.

We are currently developing this innovative positive action pilot, which will focus on female individuals who are under-represented in the workplace ie. BME women, recent women returners to the labour market and disabled women.

This project is a partnership intervention between Scottish Council of Voluntary Organisations, Engender and PATH Scotland.

This project is due to commence in October 2008.
