Equality, Inclusion and Accessibility

Village and community halls are at the heart of communities. Communities should be inclusive and welcoming to all, and should take steps to show they are open to a diverse range of people – after all, appealing to the community is how your village hall will survive and prosper.

Village halls and community spaces are classed as service providers under the Equality Act 2010. No-one using a village or community hall should be discriminated against on the grounds of:

  • age
  • gender reassignment
  • being married or in a civil partnership
  • being pregnant or on maternity leave
  • disability
  • race including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • religion or belief
  • sex or sexual orientation.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has produced useful guidance for Service Providers under the Equality Act 2010.

This useful factsheet compiled by Community Places is a great introduction to accessibility issues for managers of community buildings.

There are also useful guides found on Disability Equality Scotland Information Hub.
